Chinese-American mezzo Sun-Ly Pierce’s fierce passion for music of all genres has led her to an eclectic range of performance opportunities.
Past operatic roles have included Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, Nada in Svadba , Dorinda in Acis and Galatea , Suor Pazienza in Mese Mariano and the Nursing Sister in Suor Angelica . 2018-2019 season events featured Pierce’s first performance as the mezzo-soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah with the Mohawk Valley Choral Society and Orchestra in Utica, NY and her debut with the Broad Street Orchestra performing selections from Hector Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été for the “Concerts in the Village” in Kinderhook, NY. This summer, she sang the role of Olivia in the west coast premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s opera Cold Mountain and was the mezzo-soprano soloist in Stravinsky’s Pulcinella , conducted by Thomas Adès, at the Music Academy of the West as a 2019 Vocal Fellow. In addition to winning the Marilyn Horne Song Competition at Music Academy, Pierce was a semi-finalist in the Kurt Weill Foundation’s Lotte Lenya Competition this past year. She will return to the Music Academy of the West this summer where she will sing the role of L’enfant in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges and cover Hänsel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel.
Originally from Clinton, NY, Pierce holds a bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from the Eastman School of Music. She recently graduated from the Graduate Vocal Arts Program at Bard College Conservatory of Music.
